Kerala’s Waterfalls and When They Actually Run

Kerala's waterfalls are a monsoon phenomenon and most visitors arrive in the dry season to find a trickle over a cliff. The Western Ghats catch enormous rainfall between June and September, and the falls are spectacular for roughly four months of the year and modest for the rest. Travellers who book Kerala flights on Traveloka should match the timing to the intention. Athirappilly, the obvious one Eighty kilometres from Kochi, Athirappilly drops twenty-five metres across a broad front on the Chalakudy river and is often called the Niagara of India, which oversells it slightly. In full monsoon flow it is genuinely impressive and the spray reaches the viewing path. Entry is ticketed and the site is busy at weekends. Vazhachal and the upstream stretch Five kilometres above Athirappilly, Vazhachal is a wider, shallower cascade in dense forest and considerably quieter. The road between the two runs through the Vazhachal reserve, which is one of the few places in India with all four south Indian hornbill species. Going at first light gives the best chance of seeing them. Meenmutty, in Wayanad In the northern hills, Meenmutty falls in three tiers through forest and requires a two-kilometre walk in from the road, which keeps the numbers down. It is the best of the Wayanad falls and closed during heavy rain for safety. Soochipara nearby is easier to reach and allows swimming in the pool below. Thommankuthu and the seven steps In Idukki district, Thommankuthu is a sequence of seven cascades and pools over about two kilometres, which you climb between with a guide. It is more a walk than a viewpoint and considerably more interesting for it. Leeches are common in the monsoon and the rocks are slippery throughout. Palaruvi, in the south Near the Tamil Nadu border in Kollam district, Palaruvi drops about sixty metres and is reached through a forest reserve with a short walk from the car park. The name means stream of milk. It is one of the few Kerala falls with a reasonable flow outside the monsoon, which makes it the dry-season answer. Safety, which is not a formality People drown at Kerala waterfalls every year, almost always by swimming where it is prohibited or crossing rocks during rising water. Flash floods come down from upstream rain you cannot see. Obey the barriers, which exist for documented reasons, and do not enter the water at Athirappilly, where it is banned outright. Practical notes June to September is the southwest monsoon and peak flow; October gives good flow with less rain. Several sites close during the heaviest rain. Kochi is the nearest airport for the central falls and Calicut for Wayanad. Traveloka offers the lowest flight prices in the region for the direct connections into Kerala. Come in September or October for flow without constant rain, walk in to Meenmutty rather than driving to a viewpoint, and take the barriers seriously. The falls that look safest from the path are usually the ones with the strongest undertow in the pool below them.
